The Austrian mountain resort Hallstatt, in Salzkammergunt area,is one of the most picturesque settlements,at the foot of the mountain Salzberg and on the border of Alpine Lake Hallstattersee.
The settlement has a total of 1,000 people. Many houses are placed on mountain and you can see narrow alleys, wood or stone staires. There are no courtyards and sometimes no fences because of the reduced space.
In Hallstatt, as in many other mountain resorts of Austria, can practice various winter sports, and every year the tourists arrivals reach here about 1 million.
The town is famous because of the salt deposits operated from ancient times and the archaeological discoveries dating from the first iron age(1150-350 BC). The Culture Hallstatt was introduced in the book of history and the name of the era, Hallstatt, was derived from the name of the place.
One of the oldest settlements of Austria, it has also the oldest salt mine in the world (the name Hall – from salt) and the wooden stairs of the mine can still seen after 35 centuries.
The main street of the settlements, Seestrasse, lies on the border of the lake. Here you can find stores filled with decorative glass, art galleries, sports stores and restaurants.
Hallstatt, located at 508 metres high, is a special destination.
