During all his years as a photographer, the famous Gerard Levy managed to assemble one of the best collection depicting Jewish life in North Africa. More than 300 vintage ethnographic photographs, unique documents depictings the varied aspects of life in North African countries, taken between 1880 - 1910, have been found and put together by Levi. The artist chose to donate this unique collection to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, who organised a interesting exhibition, opened until 30 June 2007, with the title " Out of North Africa: Photographs of Jewish Life from the Gerard Levy. Collection in the Israel Museum".
This collection is not only of great artistic value, but also very important for those historians passionate about the Jewish life at the end of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th. Aside the photographs, many of them real masterpieces, the curators have chosen several ethnic artifacts from the museum's rich collections, trying to build the complete image of a world and time nearly forgotten.
