The Museum of Modern Art in New York is hosting, starting at the end of October 2007 an exhibition of drawings signed by one of the greatest European artists, Georges Seurat, whose style and creations influenced to a great degree 19th and 20th century art. According to the organisers, the curators have chosen only the best of Seurat's works on paper, and around 135 works will be presented in the first exhibition dedicated exclusively to the drawings of Seurat, in the last quarter of a century. |
The drawings will be show along a selection of oil sketches and paintings, to better build an image of the artist's ideas and themes. The ultimate goal of the curators is to present, by means of drawings, a comprehensive presentation of all major phases in the life and career of George Seurat, from his beginnings as an art student to the much later, monumental compositions.
Seurat's drawings are simply fascinating both for his admirers and for those who have just discovered his work. Offering a descriptive and romantic image of the 19th century Paris and it's bohemian life, Seurat manages to capture on paper, in delicate lines and inteligent tones, playing with light and shadow, the world around him. The inventor of pointillism, an idea and style that forever placed him in the gallery of great artists, proves to be also a very tallented draftsman, as his way of working combines the classical influences and the new, inedite approach.
