Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732 - 1806) was in his time a very popular and admired painter, famous for his romantic and dreamy style, very much in demand at that time. The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will host an exhibition dedicated to the works of this artist, best known at that time for his genre scenes, landscapes and fantasy portraits. The curators of the future show have chosen to focus mainly on Fragonard's allegorical images of live, dramatic and emotional reflections created by the painter in his latter years, combining a rather poor color palette and and allegorical artistic vocabulary.
The result, although rather different from what Fragonard had done previously, surprised his admireres and collectors. For the show at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute the curators have chosen and impressive number of oil paintings, drawings, prints, book illustrations, on loan or from the museum's collections.
