Fondaco dei Tedeschi is Venetian historic building, which is situated on the Grand Canal. In the past this place represented the headquarters of the German merchants. It was built in 1228 and rebuilt in 1505 – 1508 after the breaking out of a great fire.
Its architecture is typical for the Italian Renaissance. The four floor construction has a great inner courtyard. The ground floor was used as a storage, in the first floor were offices and the upper area was dedicated to 160 living quarters.
Venice was beginning with the 13th century was one of the most important trading centre. The goods were passing from the Orient to the Alps.
Recently the building was sold to the Benetton Group, who asked the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas to creat a shopping centre into the monumental building. The 16th century Fondaco dei Tedeschi will houst also exhibitions and other cultural events.
