The first winner of the Alex Leo Serban fellowship is the film critic Catalin Olaru. The fellowship pays homage to the memory of Alex Leo Serban, the critic who coined the term “New Romanian Cinema”.
Conceived as a three month residency in New York City, the fellowship is awarded to a promising Romanian film critic or journalist under 35. The grant is offered by producer Bobby Paunescu and the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF), in partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, and covers all travel, accommodation and perdiem expenses of the fellow. The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York will coordinate the fellow’s program and provide logistical support.
Catalin Olaru is a freelance film critic and regular contributor to the Romanian weekly magazine Cultura. Constantly writing movie and festival reviews, he has gained extensive knowledge of cultural journalism and event reporting, while his work experience as a movie critic for Kamikaze, a satirical magazine, from April to August 2010, has furthered both his experience in the area and his commitment to film criticism.
