The famous citatel of Fagaras with a length of over 650 years is located in the center of the Fagaras city. It was built as a defence place in the south-eastern Transilvania. It becomes in the following centuries a resistence point against turkish and tartar incursions.
The citadel and it's surroundings came into the possession of the prince Stefan Mailath, the voivode of Transilvania. The turks attacked it in 1526 led by Mustafa Pasa. After long battles the turks captured the voivode who died after 10 years without a chance to gain his freedom.
After a long history in the begining of the eighteenth century the citadel was a the residence of the princes of Transilvania. The Dietei hall, situated on the first floor, hosted four of the important meetings held inside the citadel.
The official documents of that time recorded that at one of the four meeting a participated a delegation of the muntean ruller, Serban Cantacuzino.
Today's aspect of the citadel is due to the restoration and strenghtening done in time. Thru this we remind that in 1630 the ditch around the Fagaras citadel was enlarged and connected by a secret tunnel with Olt river. Also there was built a bridge at the entrance to prevent the penetration of the atackers.
Over the years the supply stores and cellars of the city have become cells where the rebellious peasants and serf were thrown.
Today the scaffoldings surround the old walls to transform the citadel in what it was in old times. Also it will be a museum in short time.
