Maria Eva Duarte de Perón was born on May 7, 1919 and was the second wife of the President of Argentina, Juan Perón. She was the First Lady for six years, until her tragical death. She is often referred to simply Eva or Evita Perón.
She spent her childhood in the small village Los Toldos and she was the fourth of the five children of her family. She grew up very poor without a father. That is the reason why her mother couldn’t send her to school. Eva had to work in the houses of the rich families. When she was 15 years old she moved to Buenos Aires, where she persued a career as an actress. Evita worked on stage, on the radio and si also played in mivies.
Eva met Juan Perón, only a colonel at that time, during a charity event for the victims of an earthquake and they married in the following year. In 1946 her husband became the president of Argentina. In the next six years, the First Lady became powerfull also by leading the Ministries of Labor and Health. She founded and ran the charitable Eva Perón Foundation, but also the first great female political party named The Female Peronist Party. Her Foundation built hundreds of schools and hospitals in Argentina and also helped the poor workers of Argentina to gain respect, because they were very exploited.
Eva Perón became more powerfull by accepting the Peronist nomination for the Office of the Vice President of her country. She received support from the working class. Her declining health forced her to retrect her candidacy. Although she got the title of the “Spiritual Leader of the Nation” by the Argentine Congress.
Evita was diagnosed with cancer in 1950 and died in July, 1951. She was only 33 years old. She had a an official state funeral, despite the fact that she wasn’t head of state. All activity in Argentina stopped and the radio and the televisions interrupted the schedule with the sad news:"Eva Perón, Spiritual Leader of tne Nation entered immortality”.
Eva Perón became the most famously subject and part of the international popular culture and was the first woman who wrought changes in the entire political and social order.
