As an important adition to the special exhibition Venice and the Islamic World, 828 - 1797 , which has already enjoyed a great success, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is hosting between March 27 - June 24 a fascinating exhibition titled Europe and the Islamic World : Prints, Drawings and Books. The works on paper chosen for this event come from the museum's collections and it is a rare chance to discover how the Europeans of those times perceived with fascination and awe the Muslim world, from the peoples to the designs, art and customs. |
The works presented are varied and interesting, ranging from an engraving made by Albrecht Durer, depicting a Turkish family, to the sketches produced by Eugene Delacroix during his visit to Morocco in 1832, all of them presenting how the European artists understood and reproduced a culture that they both admired and feared or imitated. Besides the works of art the curators have chosen and organized several documents and records from the diplomatic missions, and also a careful selection of documents about how the Islam influenced European fashion and architecture.
