The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada is hosting until September 23 2007 a retrospective exhibition of the works of Emily Carr (1871 - 1945), one of the most popular and influential Canadian artists, the first event of this kind in the last three decades. |
The curators have chosen around 200 objects (150 executed by the artist) from paintings and rawings to watercolours, caricatures, sculpture, ceramics, rugs, books, documents, maps, photographs and others, presenting in detail the themes, details, ideas and techniques used by Carr.
The show has proven to be a success, as it presented the works of Emily Carr in a new light, focusing on the importance of the artist in Canadian art of the 19th - 20th century, both as a painter and a writer. Emily Carr is best remembered for her landscapes, inspired mainly by the views of British Columbia. The organisers have managed to present her legacy and the cultural, political and social context in which her art appeared and developed.
