The famous Montparnasse Museum in Paris is the host of one of the most important exhibitions dedicated to Edgra Stoebel (1909 - 2001), between 26 April - 20 May 2007. Stoebel was a painter, editor, philosopher and musician, and is now considered to be one of the most talented and original artists of the 20th century. He became known after 1950, when his strange works gained recognisition for their uniqueness. |
A friend of several important artists, such as Chagall or Goetz, Stoebel believed in his work with an almost religious passion. He used to sleep very little, singing his compositions at night at the Pub Olympia, and during the day he preffered painting and drawing. Stoebel was not only a deep, original artist, but he also invented his own artistic language in the sixties, calling it Figurasynthese.
His works are easy to recognise due to their shapes and rich, varied colours. His main themes ranged from abstract constructions to the female figure, the animal world, landscapes or scenes inspired by his Jewish heritage.
