- Brasov city is a place where all the beautiful natural things were gathered in the near surroundings. The Gate of Ecatherina is something you must see here if you decide to visit Romania.
The old city gate was standing outside the walls and had galleries and wooden floors. A document from 1522 shows the existence of a deposit of shells and gunpowder, as well as a home for watchman.
In 1559 is built in front of the gate a square tower, equipped with a drawbridge on chains, over a ditch with water. In the three sides of the tower, outside, the tower was equipped with guns, so there are three shooting holes.
Built on three levels, with four towers that look medieval fortress right to impose the ultimate punishment on the residents.
Above the entrance is carved the steam of Brasov which is a crown on top of stumps with seven groups of thick roots.
The walls that formed the gate was demolished in 1827. Right now preserved outside the tower, improperly called Catherine's Gate.
This gate was built on the site of an old gate from the fourteenth or fifteenth century. The name of the gate and an adjoining street were named Catherine after a Catholic monastery near the Black Church, mentioned first in 1388 and demolished in 1559 because of the Reformation. Instead the monastery was built a boarding elementary school.
