Many countries of Eastern Europe celebrate annualy carnival. Usualy people from all around the world are celebrating the carnival under a local name. Today, the pagan fertility ceremony and the spring ceremony are combined with modern traditions. Usualy these festivities are organised in February.
Carnival, a public celebration or also a parade that combines some elements of a circus, join public street party. The participants choose to dress diferent during the celebrations to mark an overturning aspect of daily life.
Carnival in Croatia
The carnival that annualy is organised in Croatia, known also as Karneval or Maskere, takes place in various cities around the country.
The local traditions from Croatia are combined with the modern ones. The Rijeka Carnival is well known as the largest celebration from Croatia.
Carnival in the Czech Republic
In the Czech Republic the word used for Carnival is Masopust or Mardi Gras. In Prague the Carnival is named Masopust and Bohemian Carnevale.
The residents from Prague and all the visitors who decide to visit Prague during these festivities will enjoy the performance of he masked balls, costumed processions and the hog feasts.
Carnival in Hungary
Under the name "Farsang", the carnival in Hungary is every year special. Formal balls are an yearly occurrence in Budapest and another festival, named Mohacs, displays the strong folk traditions of Hungary with masked characters on the main stage. Farsang is celebrated in Hungary with good food, sauerkraut and doughnuts. While in Budapest Farsang is celebrated with parties, to the south of Hungary capital is located the best-known Carnival location, called Mohacs.
In Mohacs the Farsang is also called the Busojaras Carnival and has a tradition long as the city origins, in the 17th century. In those days the villagers from Mohacs dressed in grotesque costumes to frighten away the invading Turkish forces.
Estonia's Carnival
In Estonia the carnival is called Vastlapaev and takes place in a Tuesday. The Tuesday celebration involves sledding down an icy hill with traditional handmade crafts. Also in this day the families are enjoying a traditional estonian meal.
Carnival in Slovenia
In Slovenia the Carnival is a holiday celebrated with traditional masks and costumes. The most well known masks are Kurenti. These masks with shaggy bodies and red tongues are an appearance that scares away winter.
