Russians follow the Orthodox calendar and that is why Easter in Russia does not fall on the same day as in countries with non-Orthodox populations.
The colorful time falls on April 15, 2012 and it is accompanied by the decoration of the entire home and especially of the Easter eggs, delicious food and other special traditions. Like Christmas, Easter in Russia is one of the most important Russian holidays.
The tradition of the Easter eggs dates back to pre-Christian era. Eggs were the symbol of fertility, later they took on Christian symbolism. Today red eggs symbolize the blood of Christ.
Some Russian families preserve the old custom decorating the eggs with geometric or organic traditional designs with regional significance, landscapes, churches, scenes from stories, or other images.
The Easter meal is also very important for the Russians and the Kulich – the Russian easter bread – or the Paskha – a kind of dish made of cheese – blessed by the church are always present among other traditional specialities.
