The EFA Master Class 2012 THE SOUND OF THE IMAGE is dedicated to the topic of sound in feature films.
This year's EFA Master Class, presented in co-operation with the Film and Television University "Konrad Wolf" (HFF) and supported by the MEDIA Programme of the EU, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Meyer Sound, will take place from 2 to 8 July 2012 in Berlin and Potsdam (Germany) and will be held by French sound re-recording mixer Bruno Tarrière and sound editor Selim Azzazi, who have collaborated on various projects, among these THE CONCERT (2009) by Radu Mihăileanu, ALEXANDER (2004) by Oliver Stone, BAOBER IN LOVE (2004) by Li Shaohong, EARTH AND ASHES (2004) by Atiq Rahimi and DIVINE INTERVENTION (2002) by Elia Suleiman.
The master class is open for 18 European creative film professionals who work on sound – this applies particularly to sound editors, sound re-recording mixers and sound designers, but also to directors, composers and picture editors, who all have a crucial influence on the soundtrack of a film. The workshop will be offered in a short term training format of seven days including the arrival and departure days. Working language is English.
In a well-balanced mixture of group sessions, screenings, case studies and lectures, but with a focus on hands-on exercises, the workshop will allow participants to gain a profound knowledge of the impact of sound. It focuses also on new aspects of the narrative use of sound, on sound design, editing and mixing, and the question how these influence the audience’s perception of a film. At the same time, the workshop will explore the perspectives new digital technologies like the possibility of "mixing in the box" open up for the creation of a soundtrack. The work with the tutors Bruno Tarriere and Selim Azzazi will be completed by evening sessions with special guests.
We are very happy to announce that Richard King, Oscar winning sound designer for INCEPTION (2010) and THE DARK KNIGHT (2008), both directed by Christopher Nolan, for WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005) by Steven Spielberg and for MASTER AND COMMANDER – THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (2003) by Peter Weir, will join us.
Deadline for applications is 25 May 2012. Participation fee: EUR 600 covering participation and meals. Transport and accommodation are not included. A limited amount of scholarships is available.
