The "Drawings and Prints from Holland's Golden Age" installation is presented as an addenda to the larger show "The Age of Rembrandt: Dutch Paintings" and is actually a selection of drawings and prints made by artists working in Holland in the 17th century, such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacob van Ruisdael, Albert Cuyp, Adriaen van Ostade, Willem Buytewech, and Jacques de Gheyn II. Despite the fact that most of these artworks come from the museum's own collections, most of them have rarely - or even never - been seen before. |
Most of the drawings are studies for much larger compositions, others are simple exercises, while the prints are either finished works or preparatory compositions. The works were mostly inspired by real models and images, often the model being portretized in several angles on the same sheet. These types of works also offered the artist a chance of experimenting and trying more approaches and mediums.
