The National Museum Eugene Delacroix will open at the end of next month a new exhibition dedicated to Eugene Delacroix, this time examining his early years, 1822 to 1830, placing a close focus on his relationships with other contemporaries, such as Gericault, Bonington, Huet and others. It is the first time that the relationships, influences, adversities are presented in such a manner in a show, and the curators have taken great care in selecting some of the best of Delacroix' artworks, as well as paintings, drawings and engravings signed by his masters (Guerin, Gerard, Gros) as well as his contemporaries (Gericault, Cogniet, August, Constable, Lawrence), many also being his close friends. |
Eugene Delacroix, today considered one of the most important French artists of the 19th century and one of the best artists of the Romantic movement, had his share of friendships and adversities. Besides now famous artists, then only young promising talents, Delacroix befriended several artists and writers of his times, such as Stendhal, Merimee, Dumas, Hugo. Over the years these friendships proved to be both a support and a source of artistic influence.
