Château de Villandry is located in Villandry, in the département of Indre-et-Loire in France. Because of its marvellous gardens and its beauty, the castle is very impressive.
Château de Villandry has an old and interesting history. Acquired in the early 1500’s by Jean Le Breton, France’s Controller-General for War under King Francois I, a new château was constructed around the original 14th-century keep and completed in 1536.
For more than two centuries the castle belonged to the Le Breton family. Marquis de Castellane bought the castle and turned it into a comfortable 18th century style castle. It was taken away in the early 1800’s - during the French Revolution – by Emperor Napoleon.
Unfortunately the castle was abandoned over a 100 years and so it fell to ruin. Dr. Joachim Carvallo saved the castle in 1906. He poured an enormous amount of time, money and devotion into repairing the castle and creating what many consider to be the most beautiful gardens anywhere in the world.
The gardens are the main attraction at Chateau de Villandry. The gardens contain three areas: the ornamental flower gardens, a water garden and the vegetable gardens.
Tourists can also visit the interior of the castle. They can admire beautiful decoration, the furnished rooms but also the dining room or even the kitchen.
