The Louvre Museum in Paris will be hosting, starting on the 31st of May 2007, an important exhibition dedicated to one of the best known French artists : Camille Corot. Born in 1796, Corot was not only a talented painter, but also a talented draftsman, producing hundreds of paintings, ranging from independent compositions to sutdies for his more elaborate works. The Louvre Museum has most of his drawings, the most important collection of Corot's works in the world, donated in 1927 by Etienne Moreau-Nelaton.
This exhibition will not only be a chance for art lovers to discover the style and manner of Corot, but also to retrace his life and career, focusing on the main stages in his evolution. The curators have already chosen with great care the most representative works, from drawings to sketches, studies, notebooks and letters, trying to retrace how Corot worked. The artist also travelled a lot, finding new sources of inspiration during his voyages and reproducing what he saw in his drawings. His themes were varied - landscapes, nudes, monuments, portraits - all drawn with the same care and precision. The exhibition will also present, by means of several works, the key-role that Camille Corot played in the field of 19th century engraving.
