One of the most important and beautiful cities of Romania, an old, historical place filled with legends and traditions, a major part of the cultural identity of the country, Brasov is a modern city, yet an old and charming one, as the modern part mix masterfully with the old. The Poiana Brasov resort is also very close by, the mountains, atmosphere and historical part of the city are amazing, and the sights, restaurants and buildings are worth a visit every time. Also, each year the city hosts the International Festival Golden Stag, a tradition and a brand already, due to the name of important international singers who have come here. It is one of those recommended places to anyone who wishes to enjoy himself.
You must begin your visit in Piata Sfatului, the central square of the old town, a large space surrounded by classical buildings, having several nearby shopping streets, with small shops, restaurants and bars. Here you can also admire Casa Sfatului, a beautiful structure, hundreds years old - was built in 1420 - and nowadays hosting one of the best museums in the region. Go on to the beautiful symbol of the city, the Black Church, a huge gothic structure dating from the 15th century, which owes it's name to a fire wchich blackened it's walls. This is, without the shadow of a doubt, one of the most beautiful Gothic structures in Eastern Europe, and a veritable magnet for all visitors, who come here time and time again. Tall, impressive, with a small exhibition inside, wonderful interior decorations, a sense of peace and belief, and it also hosts classical music concerts. After completing your shopping or having a meal nearby, it is time to discover the rest of the sights in Brasov. Stick to the old part of the town, for the new one, although modern and rather "hip", shall we say, doesn’t offer just as much enjoyement.
Why not visit some of Brasov's museums ? The Art Museum has some very interesting selection of Romanian art in his permanent exhibition, many signed by great national artists, as well as works of European masters, some of these being more than interesting. There are also several art galleries, such as the Bistro de l'Arte, Victoria 2004, Transilvania Art Gallery or Saba Gallery, dedicated to the exhibiting and selling of contemporary Romanian art, although you may have the chance of seeing works by your foreign artists. Those who are more into the old history of the city a visit to the small exhibitions at the Black Tower, White Tower or the Graft are a must, for these were part of the old fortification system which protected the city. These walls, towers and fortifications are still in existence, wonderfully preserved and can be visited, and it is a fascinating trip hundreds of years ago. One could almost expect a kinght in armour and with sword in hands to appear. Also, you must visit the so-called Bastionul Tesatorilor, a reminder of the importance that guilds had in the history of the city.
There are also other beautiful churches, besides the Black Church. St Nicholas is one, a place of worship dating from the 14th century, a major centre for the Orthodox national Church and one of the most beautiful historical monuments in the city. You must visit it and enter the church, to admire the paintings, the rich collection of icons and various items, the wonderful interior decorations. Also, just as beautiful is the St Bartholomew Church, dating from the 13th century. There is also an interesting synagogue which is surely worth your time. These are just a few pointers, for there is much more to see in Brasov and it's surroundings. Much more. The medieval part is fascinating and takes several visits just to become accustomed with.
Don't forget to check into one of the hotels in Brasov, one for every budget and style, to have lunch at one of the restaurants, relax with friends in a bar. Do your shopping. Take a lot of pictures. Take the bus and go to Poiana Brasov or go by foot to one of the best mountain resorts in the country. Brasov has all of this and more.
