Berthe Morisot is still considered today one of the most important Impressionist painters of all times. But her career is also important for art history as she managed to become a respected name in the field in late 19th century France, at a time when female artists, and especially one who was interested in the ill-famed Impressionism, had to overcome major hardships. Yet Morisot managed to overcome any obstacles, exhibited at the very first Impressionist show and in a short time was rather well known by art dealers and collectors, many drawn by her delicate, yet modern style, easily recognasible. |
She later further strenghtened her bond to the Impressionist circles by marrying Eugene Manet, the brother of the famous Edouard Manet. As she became familiar to the domestic life and happenings, her themes and subjects changed, becoming much more personal, involving children, scenes of domestic bliss, gardening. All the time she tried to improve on her manner and become a better artist. She was also the student of Camille Corot and many thought of her as a leader of the Impressionist movement, alongside Renoir or Degas, yet her works and personality still do not have the recognisition they deserve. |
The Sompo Japan Museum of Art, Tokyo is presenting an exhibition dedicated to Berthe Morisot, oane of the few retrospectives put together for the artists, showing some of her best works and a great number of details about her professional and personal life.
