The Monastery of St. Dimitrie Basarabov is an Orthodox monastery that was built in a cave. In that cave the stories tell us that the New St. Dimitrie was born.
The village Basarabov is located at a distance of 4 kilometers from the Danube river. The old village was originally closer to the Danube but the new settlement was moved closer to Ivanovo.
The location of the Basarabov village is a pitoresque one and stretches in the valley of the Lom River.
All those who decide to visit the Basarabovo region from Bulgaria are welcomed with the cave in whitch the Saint Dimitrie was born. Known as a church, this is the only one in Bulgaria that is carved into the rock.
The actual church was built in 1865 with some material support received from Romania. The village, the estate and the monastery belonged to the first ruler of Romanian Country, Basarab I.
In the time of the Russian-Romanian-Turkish war the church burned and many valuable icons were stolen. The village of Basarabovo was also destroyed entirely.
The monk Hrisant renewed the monastery un the year of 1937, the time when he settled in these places, living until 1961.
Today, the people who decide to visit the village and the Monastery Basarabovo will be the witness of an important part of history, told by books in a manner that can not be compared to the emotion of seeing what this history meant to places, monuments and people conceptions.
