7. Comments: Florin Stoiciu belongs to a young generation of Romanian printmakers whose aim is, starting from a re-estimation and re-consideration of the classical languages of the engraving techniques, to elaborate another aesthetic of the print, more radical and more aggressive in expression. This process doesna€™t happen could be recorded unusled, but in the stylistic and thematical level, at the same time with the unwonted association of an allegorical attributes and the their uncorporation into an existential sphere, contemporary sharp.
The images of Florin Stoiciu in the series a€śThe Maska€ť (a recurrent and obsessive motif of his iconography and his concerns), are organized in a first stage into snapshots, ordered in sequences worked in etching, printed on a single sheet and resembling somehow comic strips. In a second step, each of these sequences (equivalent to a study of composition) are methamorphosed into independent works, as a result of using combined techniques. They build on a structure originating in dreamy sources and breathing in a mysterious and restless atmosphere. The heroes (falling angels or couples captured into an inextricable net), cross over initiatory and conflicting routes, destined to suggest the dilemma of the human being, dramatically increased at the beginning of the new millenium.
The thorough study of complex symbolical connotations characterizes a whole direction of Romanian contemporary engraving and defines also Florin Stoiciua€™s work, which fits at the same time into the large wave of a multiform post-modernity now energing in Eastern and Central Europe.
