Starting on May 13th, the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, USA, is presenting for art lovers one of the few exhibition dedicated to the presence of the sea in the works of American painters. The organisers have chosen an impressive selection of works by artists such as Giuseppe Moretti, Balcomb Greene, Alfred Thompson Bricher, Edward Henry Potthast, William Trost Richards an others.
Covering more than a century of art, the exhibition focuses on the fascination that the sea had on US artists, fascinated by the power and beauty of the never resting oceans and seas, trying to capture their life and images in sculpture and painting, but also in poetry. In order for the visitors to have a more complete view, the curators are showcasing the works together with passages from authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville or Ernest Hemingway, thus demonstrating how the sea was viewed by everyone. |
