In his half of century of history the Museum of Arts and Design in New York has been the host of several important exhibitions, and the next one, dedicated solely to goblets, is bound to be a success. It is an unique selection of goblets of all kind, sizes and in all mediums : glass, metal, fiber, wood, mixed media and even clay. Some are made by important artists of our times, others by forgotten names, but "Cheers! A MAD Collection of Goblets" is certainly an event.
Basically, one could say that a goblet is nothing more than a drinking glass with a stem, yet the artists have used this simple definition in creating countless variations of all shapes and colors, most with rich decorations. The show brings together a diverse and large selection of goblets made by more than 100 artists worldwide, from masters to new voices, and most of the exhibits are presented for the first time. The show also includes already classical pieces, such as the Tulip Goblet, made in 1953 by the Swedish artist Nils Landberg. |
